Parent: Son denied lunch due to not wearing mask

An Armstrong (Pa) Central High School parent said
her son was denied lunch for refusing to wear a mask on the first day in which they were required. Mandi Stewart said the district withheld food as punishment for her son, 10th grader Colton Stewart, for not complying with the state mandate to have a face covering or mask on while in school. The state mandate went into effect Tuesday.

Stewart said her son made it from 7:30 a.m. to about 10:30 a.m. without a mask and without incident even with
two teachers requesting her son wear a mask, and a cafeteria worker requested Colton put a mask on,
and once again he declined. He then went to the principal’s office, contacted his mother and was picked up around 1 p.m., less than two hours from regular dismissal, according to Stewart.

She said she spoke with a principal about the situation and
she has contacted an attorney to see if it is legal to withhold food from a student.
(Expect her to sue for $$$)

Assistant Superintendent Josh Williams said
“No student was denied a lunch for not wearing a mask”.
Williams said a handful of high school students did walk out in an anti-mask protest Tuesday. He said staffers were following the state mandate as well as advice from health care professionals. Williams said “We’ve had some protesting, largely by parents, which is also understandable.”

When he went to his first class of the day without a mask, he should have been sent to the principal's office. If he still wouldn't put on a mask, he should have been sent home for the day. His parents should have been called and one of them should have come to get him. The school should do this every day until the kid complies with the rules.

7. Part of growing up is taking responsibility for your actions and considering

the needs of others. No such lesson was taught or learned in this instance. Rules are rules and when you break them, there are consequences.

One of my grandsons just started preschool a couple of weeks ago. My son and daughter-in-law were concerned because they were told he wasn't eating at school. My advice was not to worry and not to make a big deal out of it. He eats breakfast and then eats when he gets home a little after 3. He will be just fine if he goes for seven hours without food.

The spoiled brat 10th grader who alleges he was denied food will also survive. It's laughable that the mother would actually contact an attorney over such a ridiculous thing. She's raising a kid who will likely be in trouble many times over the coming years.

9. I think this was a 'setup' by the mother so she could sue the school

10. A child raised in depression

My mother wore old rubber boots to school because her parents were poor and couldn’t afford regular shoes. Food was scarce. I think the child probably could stand missing a meal. Give me a break!

12. I STRONGLY disagree with withholding lunch. Not because I don't think this kid can't skip a meal

but because the republiQans will use it as a precedent to stop serving school lunches to the kids who don't have food at home.

And yes, there are a lot of those. I worked in an area where we used to have to pack backpacks of food for vacations so our kids would have something to eat. We began doing that when we noticed that some slightly bigger kids were stealing food and giving it to the little kids in their families.

This kid should have been barred at the door and not allowed entry.

14. Yes, but there are responses in the thread that seem to support the idea of withholding lunch,

or who indicate it would be no big deal.

It's probably a moot point anyway. That mom is probably going to be on facebook in a few weeks asking for prayers for family members and wondering how and why God gave Covid to members of her family. And in the meantime, she and her clan will have infected hundreds.
