U.S. House District 17 race between Chris Deluzio, Jeremy Shaffer getting national focus

WASHINGTON — In the battle for the U.S. House majority, Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District is emerging as one to watch, and the national dollars being funneled to the southwestern Pennsylvania area show the party leaders’ increasing focus on the race.

While not as high-profile or bitter as the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate contest that is expected to attract tens of millions of dollars, the 17th District race between Democrat Chris Deluzio and Republican Jeremy Shaffer has the attention of the national committees and their respective PACs — each side committing a few million dollars to buy time on the Pittsburgh airwaves, where money can stretch further than in larger U.S. media markets.

Mr. Deluzio, a former Navy officer who served in Iraq and who emerged as a go-to expert on election reform in recent years as Pitt Cyber policy director, and Mr. Shaffer, a former Ross commissioner and software engineer who graduated from CMU, are vying for outgoing Democratic Rep. Conor Lamb’s seat.

The district territory covers all of Beaver County and a large portion of Allegheny County that hugs the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Redrawn lines following the 2020 census resulted in the district losing a corner of Butler County but gaining a bit more ground to the south and east of the city.

The 17th CD has no incumbent candidate because Rep. Conor Lamb stepped down to run for the US Senate against John Fetterman in the May primary.

2. If Conor Lamb is your Representative now, then yes

The 17th Congressional District is the northwest part of Allegheny County, all of Beaver County, and some of the southernmost part of Butler County. I hope this helps.

3. My district

It lost a pretty red area - the Cranberry Twp part of Butler county - and gained more of Democratic Allegheny county. Beaver County itself is a red county, but despite the entire county being part of the district, it's dwarfed by the part of Allegheny county part of the district. Imo, CD17 actually got more Democratic, not less during redistricting.

Both candidates are from Allegheny county, DeLuzio - Aspinwall/Fox Chapel area, Schaffer - Ross Twp area.

I've seen more ads from DeLuzio, but Rs are running their usual stuff trying to link Ds with the more well-known progressive Dems. I find those ads juvenile and inane, but I guess Rs think they work. Seen bio type ads from both candidates.

Here's an interesting side note, where I live is a quite conservative and red area with outnumbered and discouraged Dems. But the other day got a letter in the mail from my township's Dems telling me they were holding an event next weekend to gather and meet the candidates including DeLuzio and the local state house candidate! Usually mailers come from the county Dem party making the letter a first! It says something that Dems even in a red township like mine are organizing and intent on getting out every Dem voter.

4. Wow that's encouraging!

I'm very familiar with Cranberry Township, because I worked at a printing company on Freedom Road for many years. Retired now, but I still visit the area occasionally. Of course I've always voted in Pittsburgh where I live. But it's amazing when you drive north for about 20 minutes to Cranberry and it's "another world."
