Larger Pa. property tax and rent rebates to start going out July 1

HARRISBURG — Some 442,000 Pennsylvanians soon will begin receiving their property tax and rent rebates for taxes paid last year; nearly 80,000 of them are getting rebates for the first time.

Gov. Josh Shapiro along with Revenue Secretary Pat Browne on Monday announced the initial distribution of rebates totaling $266 million will begin going out on July 1, which is the earliest the law allows them to be distributed. That is up from the 283,468 homeowners and renters who received $132 million in rebates last year as a result of an expansion of the rebate amounts and eligibility criteria that took effect this year.

“The Property Tax Rent Rebate program has long been a lifeline for Pennsylvanians – and in my first year, we expanded the PTRR program and passed the largest targeted tax cut for our seniors in nearly two decades,” Mr. Shapiro said at an event held at the Upper Darby Senior Center. “This is a big deal for our seniors – and it’s proof that we can work together in a bipartisan manner to get stuff done.”

This program benefits Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older and people with disabilities age 18 and older. As a result of changes made last year, homeowners and renters who fall into any of those categories with incomes of up to $8,000 are eligible for a $1,000 rebate; $8,001 to $15,000, a $770 rebate; $15,001 to $18,000, a $460 rebate; and $18,001 to $45,000, a $380 rebate.
