PA-HD45: Pa. House speaker sets special election to fill vacancy, break majority tie
HARRISBURG A special election will be held in the Pittsburgh area on March 25 to fill a vacancy in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, one that would break the current 101-101 tie in the General Assemblys lower chamber.
House Speaker Joanna McClinton on Tuesday issued a Writ of Election to Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt and Allegheny Countys Board of Elections to announce the special election in the 35th Legislative District.
The districts makeup favors a Democratic candidate. The winner would succeed former Democratic state Rep. Matt Gergely, 45, who died Sunday.
According to House rules, the speaker must issue a writ within 10 days following a members vacancy.
Gergely had been hospitalized following a medical emergency around the December holiday season.
