Ed Gainey (D) gets first big endorsement of Pittsburgh's mayoral primary

Mayor Ed Gainey has gained the first major endorsement of the mayoral primary election, earning a nod from the United Steelworkers District 10 Tuesday morning.

“The steelworkers built our city, and I couldn’t be more honored to have earned their support as we continue making Pittsburgh the best place for workers in America,” Mr. Gainey said in a post on social media.

Steelworkers District 10 represents the entirety of Pennsylvania. They represent thousands of workers in the city that range from staff and faculty at the University of Pittsburgh to healthcare workers and of course, steelworkers. Mr. Gainey joined university employees at protests in 2023 as they were organizing for their union.

The steelworkers are the first large labor union in Pittsburgh to make their endorsement in the race. In the 2021 election, they endorsed former Mayor Bill Peduto, who lost the Democratic primary to Mr. Gainey.
