Michael Helfrich now says he won't run for reelection, endorses Walker for York City mayor

York City's mayoral primary race is down to a single candidate: Sandie Walker.

Incumbent mayor Michael Helfrich hasn't officially withdrawn yet but he told The York Dispatch he is dropping out of the race. That means Walker, the former city council president, will run unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

Petitions to appear on primary ballots were due on Tuesday. Walker and Helfrich, who had both filed to run in the Democratic primary, were the only York City mayoral candidates on a York County Elections Office and Voter Registration candidate list dated March 13. No Republican candidates filed to run for mayor.

But on Wednesday night, Helfrich appeared on former mayoral candidate Shareef Hameed's "Hour of Power" web series that he was stepping out of the race and said he was already planning for a smooth transition.
