Providence mayor likens the city's looming pension crisis to climate change

PROVIDENCE — Mayor Jorge Elorza likens the city’s unfunded pension liability problem to climate change.

“There’s a huge challenge that’s looming somewhere out there but until it’s immediate and it’s urgent and you’re on that cliff, until you have a crisis, it’s hard to motivate the political will to get folks to say, ‘Yes, we need to do something,’” he said during a Friday interview in his office at City Hall.

But, much like climate change, the crisis is “looming” in the not-so-distant future.

Some climate scientists have said the world has about 12 years until carbon emissions reach a point of no return.
