A North Providence town employee has been fired after sending a racist message on Facebook, the mayor said.
Darren Barnes, who worked as a custodian for the town at the Police Department, was fired Friday morning, Mayor Charles Lombardi confirmed.
I dont tolerate that nonsense, Lombardi said.
According to a report in GoLocalProv, a screenshot circulated on social media of a Facebook message in which Barnes allegedly used the N-word multiple times. Barnes did not respond to messages from The Journal left by telephone and through Facebook.
Lombardi said Barnes admitted sending the message containing racial slurs and he knew he did wrong. Lombardi said he learned of the incident Thursday night and went in at 7 a.m. to fire him first thing.
