SC election officials respond to concerns of 'disenfranchised' voter mail
HARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - State officials are joining a national call for action from the United States Postal Service ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Election officials across the nation, including the Palmetto State, signed a collaborative letter on Wednesday to the postmaster general. The notice addresses risks of “disenfranchised” voter mail with recent performances from the delivery service provider USPS.
The letter acknowledges questions surrounding lost, delayed or undelivered election mail, training deficiencies and facility operations which would not meet election standards. While it is considered “uncommon” or “rare” by South Carolina officials, those discussion topics still raise concern.
“South Carolina, like many places, has noticed a substantial delay in some mail delivery,” Voting Rights Staff Attorney Tish Gotell-Faulks says. “When we are coming up to an election, any unexpected delay may be the difference between an absentee ballot being qualified to be counted or being disqualified because it arrives late.”
