SC election officials surprised at staggering numbers of early voting

LANCASTER, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Early voting has started in South Carolina, with the number of people voting reportedly outpacing those of previous election years.

According to officials with the Lancaster County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, the first day of early voting saw a high turnout at the locations, with lines running outside buildings and wait times of more than an hour.

Queen City News had the chance to talk to some who took part in early voting, who said they did so this early to mostly “get it done,” knowing crowds may be bigger closer to Election Day and on Nov. 5 itself.

The numbers, however, are surprising to election officials.

“I think we were expecting a high turnout,” said Director Mary Ann Hudson. “But I don’t know that we anticipated this amount this early.”
