UnitedHealthcare at odds with Spartanburg Regional in contract talks

A large insurance company is warning its 4,000 members in the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System that they might have to find a new doctor elsewhere if a new contract with SRHS isn't reached soon.

UnitedHealthcare sent a letter to its insured members last week to inform them that its contract with SRHS expires Oct. 15.

United Healthcare spokeswoman Tracey Lempner said Thursday one major sticking point is the health system’s demand for a rate increase.

“(SRHS) has demanded a significant rate increase at its Spartanburg area hospitals and wants to be paid significantly more than other hospitals in the market. We have offered fair rates that ensure the people we serve in South Carolina have access to quality, affordable health care," she said.
