Phil Breseden - Gung-ho or Holding Your Nose?

I've been invited to join a post-card writing campaign to support Breseden. When I wrote to one of my friends in Tennessee to find out more about him, she said he had pissed off both sides of the fence equally when he was governor.

Is anyone here campaigning for him? It looks like he has a good chance of winning.

Ridiculous question with all due respect. His opponent is a dangerous, right wing, Trumpist. dameatball Sep 2018 #2

He was a good governor, and has reasonable positions on Democratic issues. He is a "moderate" Democrat, but won all 95 counties in the state when running for his second term.

Plus, his opponent is a batshit crazy trump humper. Do everything in your power to get him elected.

I read his positions and he definitely sounds moderate. Moderate on gun-control, pro capital punishment. Can't find his position on abortion, but i'm betting that he's not vocally pro-choice. However, he also sounds environmentally conscientious and that's a plus for the EPA.

At any rate, I start my postcard campaign on Monday. Go Phil!

I'm going to work on my postcard script and post it here for "approval".

Here's my proposed script:

Democrat Phil Breseden is running for US Senate. With your vote, Tennessee could be the state that tips the Senate from Red to Blue! As Governor, Phil secured jobs in the auto industry, balanced the budget, supported pre-K education, launched Cover Tennessee, and worked to protect the environment. Phil Breseden knows how to work with Democrats and Republicans .He’ll fix what’s broken in Washington. So this year, vote early Oct 17 - Nov 1 and avoid the lines on Nov 6th. Take back the Senate, take back our country.

The underlined parts are required. The extra parts are what I thought would make a difference. It's actually rather long for a postcard, but I'll try to fit it all in.

let me know what you think.

I guess the next question is - are you voting for him or against her?

I'm still going to campaign for him. I think flipping Tennessee would be mind-blowing.

I think he will be a good senator, and I know she will be a disaster. She is the one who connected the NRA to the Russians. Google “Marsha Blackburn NRA Russia”

I feel better. I'm not sure that just the anti-Trump message would win Tennessee voters.

Has Tennessee felt any specific negative impact from Trump already or we just holding the dam?

The farming community will be hurt with the tariffs as well as the auto industry here; VW and Nissan both have very large plants in TN. Also, Springfield, a small community north of Nashville was scheduled to have Electrolux build a large factory there and that has been put on hold by the company, largely due to the threat of tariffs.

if the Senate can stop the tariffs. That requires getting rid of the president.

I am starting to think that he thought that the tariffs would take the place of his tax cuts in terms of generating revenue. If they go into effect, those tax cuts that the middle class got will be null and void.

And in order to do that he really has to play the conservative right leaning Dem.
But I hope he goes full aggressive Democratic agenda in the Senate, when he gets there.
Tennessee is just not a Democrat’s territory, so he must tread lightly to win this state.
He knows that. Gore knew that.

He was a very good governor. Very intelligent & logical thinker. He has a degree in PHYSICS from HARVARD, after all. He inherited a mess from our prior governor, Sunquist (R), and had to make some tough decisions to return the state to more solid ground.

Plus, his opponent is a crazy, shrill, obnoxious, dim-witted Drumpf water-carrier.

This should be a land-slide victory for Bredesen, but nothing is normal these days. TN has steadily become more & more red over the last 2 decades. The concept of politics as sport has overtaken reason in TN.
