New guacamole sculpture in SETX pays tribute to Mexican culture
A new sculpture in Southeast Texas inspired by Mexican culture is turning heads and making stomachs growl. Houston officials unveiled the art installation Thursday, featuring a giant stone bowl overflowing with guacamole.
The stone bowl is known as a molcajete -- Spanish for mortar and pestle -- which some people usually use to grind salsa or guacamole. The word also means "seasoning" or "bowl" in the Aztec culture.
"It just hits home with a lot of Latinos [and] Chicanos," Artist Jesus Medel Cantu told ABC13, adding that he wanted to represent indigenous Mexican culture.
Staff from Harris County Pct. 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia's office and the Houston Arts Alliance displayed the sculpture in North Houston at the Leonel Castillo Community Center, according to KPRC.
