Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton did more than make national headlines for fleeing his home when a process server tried to hand him a subpoena last week — he also helped his Democratic opponent Rochelle Garza raise $100,000 in two days off the incident.
The fundraising push continued Monday as the campaign released an “America’s Most Wanted” spoof ad that includes a dramatization of Paxton escaping his Collin County home with his wife after the process server showed up there.
The subpoena was related to a lawsuit filed by Texas abortion funds that sued Paxton and local district and county attorneys to prevent them from prosecuting nonprofit groups that assist Texans with getting abortions in states where it’s legal.
In a court filing, the process server said he identified himself and waited outside the house to hand Paxton the subpoena, which called on him to testify at a hearing the next day. He says Paxton turned and ran away from him, then left the premises in a truck driven by his wife.
Paxton later characterized the situation as a “made-up controversy” and claimed that the man was “suspicious and erratic” and did not make his intentions clear. Emails from court documents show that the abortion funds’ lawyers had tried to serve Paxton by other means for days and only resorted to serving him at home when the attorney general's lawyers were uncooperative.
