Today, the Texas GOP published their ballot initiatives, which will be on the March 2024 Republican primary ballot. The ballot initiatives are racist, unhinged, and based on conspiracy theories. At this point, we shouldn’t expect anything less from the Republican Party of Texas.

Proposition One - Texas should eliminate all property taxes without increasing Texans’ overall tax burden.
As a homeowner in Texas, I can assure you that property taxes here are ridiculously high. Property taxes in Texas are the sixth highest in the nation.

Property taxes are a vital source of revenue for local government. The burden falls squarely on property taxes to compensate for the lack of other income. This money (property tax revenue) funds essential resources and public services for Texas citizens, including public schools, libraries, emergency services, road maintenance, and community safety measures.

then each party votes on them at their state conventions to be added to the official platform. Each party has its own set of initiatives, which will only be on their primary ballot; they are drawn up by the state party executive committees. The convention delegates can also propose items at the convention. which are voted on by all the delegates.

There is no constitutional or statutory authority for initiative, referendum, or recall. These powers are unique to home rule cities (such as Austin), and they are not available to voters at any other level of government, including the state.

we do have constitutional amendment votes in November of odd years. The Lege passes them in the session held in the first of the year then we vote on them in the fall. There are weird rules about what qualifies an amendment, having to do with $$ mostly. The constitutional amendments election is usually the lowest turnout but this year turnout was driven by an increase in retirement pay for teachers, and a big property tax cut for homeowners.

Ironic that the Rs want to do away with property taxes, since we just got a massive tax cut. I don't know where they think the money is coming from to run the state, but there it is.
