State hit for fighting Yankee sale
MONTPELIER Entergy Nuclear and NorthStar Group Services, the potential buyer of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, are fighting back against Vermonts heavy criticism of the proposed deal.
NorthStar and Entergy, in a joint filing with the federal Atomic Safety and Licensing Board earlier this month, said the states concerns dont meet criteria for a federal hearing, which the administration of Gov. Phil Scott and the Vermont attorney generals office are seeking so they can air concerns before federal regulators.
Last month, Vermont filed a sharply-worded criticism of the proposed deal, calling it a significant risk for the state and claiming NorthStar, an industrial demolition company, didnt have the demonstrated expertise or the financial wherewithal to complete the decommissioning of Vermont Yankee.
The state also questioned whether NorthStar had the money to handle the plants spent fuel until the federal Department of Energy takes ownership.
