CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Former Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney has now filed a federal racial and gender discrimination lawsuit against the city and several current and former city leaders.

She held a press conference Wednesday to announce the lawsuit, in which she also alleges retaliation and tortious interference by city leadership.

Brackney was hired as the chief of the Charlottesville Police Department in 2018 and then fired in September 2021.

She claims the city and the police department engaged in a campaign of coordinated retaliation and other acts to defame her and besmirch her reputation following her firing.

brackney reads from portions of the texts. officers text that they’re hoping for violence so they can “hunt” people “and do hood rat shit.”
“this is what swat dreams are made of”
they brag about committing violence that isn’t visible on their body worn cameras.
