George Mason University’s law school faces $38M in running losses

Enrollment at the Antonin Scalia Law School has declined significantly from recent peaks while costs have increased.

Dive Brief:

• Amid ongoing budget deficits and projected tuition revenue declines, George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School is facing a cumulative loss of $38.3 million by fiscal 2025, according to documents presented to the university’s governing board for a Thursday meeting.
• Preliminary figures show that fall enrollment in the law school has increased 18.4% from 2023, to 116 students. However, that headcount is down 27% from 2022 and less than half of the 259 students that enrolled in fall 2021.
• “The dean has been informed that the university wants to find creative ways to address the financial status of this important school,” a memo on the Scalia school’s financial situation noted.

I briefly contemplated GMU, as I was an alumni, in-state tuition, easy commute, etc. Of course, by then they’d named it after that POS and an old adviser told me “they’re to the right of Attila the Hun.” Nuff said…went elsewhere.

That’s a very bad sign.

With only 116 students, it’s too small to offer all the classes needed.

It has a lot of competition from better law schools in the DC area.

Better ask those big money donors who wanted a right wing law school to pony up.

I don’t know how many students are day students and how many students are night students.

If you want to go to law school at in state rates, the next nearest one is UVa, isn’t it? That’s $80k/year.

of law school grads might not be lining up to hire from a place that produces a bunch of RW idealogues, many of whom might have been homeschooled and not exactly well versed in many facets of contemporary society, let alone critical thinking?
