Primary election moved to Aug. 4

RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The primary election for this year’s November general election has been moved.

The Virginia Department of Elections announced on Tuesday that the primaries have been moved from June 16 to Aug. 4.

According to a release, the date was changed as part of House Bill 29, which Governor Abigail Spanberger signed into law on Friday.

Under this law, the primary date is changed only for this election year, and the change is “not contingent on the passage of the scheduled April 21, 2026 referendum, nor whether the referendum is held.”
