WinCo Foods explores location for first Seattle store

A long-vacant retail site on Aurora Avenue in North Seattle could be landing a WinCo Foods store.

Last week, the discount grocer filed an application with the city to look at redeveloping the former Sam's Club warehouse at 13550 Aurora Ave. N. for its first Seattle location.

Representatives for WinCo did not respond to a request for comment.

The Boise, Idaho-based chain was founded in 1967 and today operates more than 100 stores located mostly in the Western U.S., including a dozen in the Puget Sound area. So far, none have opened in Seattle or on the Eastside, though one appears to be headed for the former Fry's Electronics space at the Landing in Renton.
