First impact of Amazon's return-to-office mandate revealed in new data

January saw a marked increase in Monday and Friday worker foot traffic in downtown Seattle neighborhoods with Amazon office buildings, a new report states.

Mondays and Fridays in the Denny Regrade and South Lake Union neighborhoods saw 22% higher foot traffic compared with December. The rate was 36% higher than January 2024, according to the Downtown Seattle Association's Revitalization Dashboard, which was updated Friday.

January was the first month of Amazon's order to employees to be in the office five days a week. The update is the first publicly available data of the impact.

The two neighborhoods saw a weekday daily average of nearly 46,000 workers. It was still only about 74% of January 2019, as measured by Placer.ai, which collects geolocation data from mobile devices.
