Glimpse of 'Space Needle thinking' emerges for Westlake Park

Members of Bruce Harrell's cabinet gave an update earlier this month on the mayor's Downtown Activation Plan, replete with conceptual drawings of reimagined Westlake Park.

Westlake is the heart of the city, Deputy Mayor Greg Wong told media members Feb. 13. "How do we reimagine it so it can serve as that civic square for decades to come?" he asked rhetorically.

Early concepts include a big slide as rendered by landscape architecture company Berger Partnership, and a plaza with big boxes made up of large video screens, which appear to be 20 feet tall as rendered by architecture firm Olson Kundig.

The latter is an example of "Space Needle thinking," which is one component of Harrell's Downtown Activation Plan.
