Kirkland seeks developer for new Kraken ice complex on former park-and-ride site
The city of Kirkland on Monday put out a request for qualifications seeking a developer for a new two-story ice complex in partnership with the Seattle Kraken.
The facility, planned for the former Houghton Park and Ride site at 6920 NE 70th Place, would house two NHL-size ice rinks, a restaurant and community center. The RFQ calls for the developer to build the project at its own expense, with the city and the Kraken leasing the facility for an agreed-upon length of time.
The development would be similar to the Kraken's $80 million Community Iceplex in Northgate where team practices and has its headquarters, but it would serve as a training site for visiting NHL teams. It would also be available to the Kraken for other "professional ice hockey purposes," according to the RFQ.
As with the Northgate facility, there would be public uses like skating lessons and junior hockey. The Kraken would operate the restaurant and the city would operate the community center, which would be at least 12,500 square feet.
