Contractor seeks $184 million from Sound Transit over light-rail construction on I-90
Sound Transit and the contractor building light rail along the Interstate 90 bridge are locked in a legal spat over the concrete structures that hold up the train tracks.
Kiewit-Hoffman, the general contractor on the project, is asking for $184 million over what it alleges was Sound Transits improper direction to remove and replace the already installed concrete on the I-90 bridge, according to a report from September reviewed by the Business Journal.
Sound Transit denied Kiewit-Hoffmans claims in a letter sent to the contractor Monday and viewed by the Business Journal. A spokesperson for Sound Transit said the agency filed a claim in King County Superior Court this week.
The disagreement over the bridge has been bubbling since 2020, when Sound Transit raised concerns with concrete track ties, called plinths, running over the bridge. In the summer and fall of 2022, Sound Transit ordered Kiewit-Hoffman to replace most of the concrete plinths, saying they posed a safety and durability risk. In total, according to Kiewit-Hoffman, about 5,000 plinths had to be removed and replaced.
