Seattle metro leads nation in affordable housing construction

The Seattle metro built more affordable homes between 2020 and 2024 than any other U.S. city.

In an analysis of 146 markets, RentCafe notes that 14,290 units were built in the city, barely topping New York City. Among other markets, only Austin, Texas; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Atlanta; and Denver built more than 10,000 units.

Affordable building represented 24.22% of all apartment completions in the Seattle metro. The five-year increase in units was almost 40%.

The report finds that almost 310,000 new affordable apartments went up across the country between 2020 and 2024, a 73% jump from the previous five-year period. More than 91,000 went up in 2024 alone, nearly a third of the five-year total.
