Gov. Evers Submits Fair Maps to Wisconsin Supreme Court in Redistricting Litigation

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today submitted fair maps to the Wisconsin Supreme Court for the Court to consider in ongoing redistricting litigation. The governor’s proposed maps for the districts of the Wisconsin State Legislature submitted today are responsive to the will of the people, avoid partisan bias, and increase the number of competitive legislative seats. Additional details on the governor’s submitted maps are available below.

“Wisconsinites don’t want Republican or Democrat maps because Wisconsin isn’t a red or blue state—we’re a purple state, and our maps should reflect that basic fact. I’ve always promised I’d fight for fair maps—not maps that favor one political party or another—and that’s a promise I’m proud to keep with the maps I’m submitting today,” said Gov. Evers.

Gov. Evers, represented by Attorney General Josh Kaul, previously filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit before the Wisconsin Supreme Court challenging the state’s current legislative maps. Gov. Evers and Attorney General Kaul later filed a brief in the same lawsuit asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to declare Wisconsin’s legislative maps unconstitutional and institute new maps that avoid the partisan bias that has “infected” Wisconsin’s legislative maps “to the detriment of Wisconsin’s democracy.”

1. Does anyone from Wisconsin know how many House seats Democrats might pick up with fair Congressional maps?

I hope voters are fed up with the circus that Republicans have made of the House, but 2024 might still be close.

4. From what I hear, unlikely to be majorities in both or even either.

5. So we have 33 total senate seats and 99 total assembly seats

The Assembly is up for re-election every 2 years. Approximately half of them are affected by this redistricting based on having non-contiguous segments. There are 20 in the Senate, but they are up every 4 years alternating - 1/2 of the 33 plus or minus this year, the remainder up in 2026 under these new maps.

There are some curiosities in the current maps that could cause swings in November depending on how they are resolved. For example, there are about 3 or 4 assembly reps who live near each other, with their districts drawn to encircle their house, basically. One or all of them may find in the new maps that they are no longer in their current district and have to run against 1 or more incumbents

Most believe the that the Wis GOP will at the very least lose their supermajority in the Assembly and that it is possible that the Dems could pick up control of the Senate by 2026 if not this year.

It looks like the wis GOP are not planning on doing new maps. We’ll see what they give the committee to work with. I will laugh my ass off if Evers is the only one to submit maps and the court is satisfied with them. Let the gop suck on that.

8. I did not know about the assembly maps.

I did know about the senate maps for SD1, 2, and 30. All 3 senators live about 7 miles from each other and the maps literally include little “arms” to include the senators houses on/near the Fox River

The supermajority is in the Senate though. Assembly nearly has one.

9. I stand corrected on where the supermajority is.

As to the Senate and Assembly maps, each Senate district is comprised of 3 Assembly districts, so what impacts the Assembly maps also impacts the Senate maps.

My problem with the Senate is that the state supremes decided not to boot any senator currently serving district in violation of mapping laws until their next election in 2026. Still, they might get their act together knowing they will have new voters to persuade.

3. The court ruling does not include congressional maps unfortunately.

Not sure why because IMO, those are cooked as well.

This is basically the only reason based on the state constitution to redraw.

If they found causes outside our constitution, the SCOTUS could stall or overrule. They haven’t decided they have jurisdiction in how states run elections yet, for better or worse.

Despite the lock the GQP took on our state congressional map, they are contiguous.
