Madison School Board election Q&A: Martha Siravo and Bret Wagner
Voters in the Madison school district will choose on the April 1 ballot between disability rights advocate Martha Siravo and engineer Bret Wagner for Madison School Board.
The candidate with the most votes will fill the vacant Seat 3 on the School Board after incumbent Laura Simkin decided against seeking reelection.
School Board members serve in staggered three-year terms as part of the Madison Metropolitan School District’s seven-member group. Board members pass policies affecting over 25,000 students across 52 schools and approve the school district’s annual budget.
The elected candidate will join the School Board as members seek to remedy a $22.9 million budget shortfall and plan how the district will spend a combined $607 million in funding from tax referendums. Voters in November approved a $507 million referendum for facilities upgrades and a $100 million referendum for operational costs.
