Opinion Susan Crawford trounced 'Elon Schimel' in the court debate
Going into last week’s Supreme Court debate, friends and foes of Dane County Judge Susan Crawford were well aware that the candidate had never before participated in a high-stakes political debate that would be televised statewide and scrutinized by every media outlet in Wisconsin. This led to speculation about how she might do in a clash with a rival who has spent much of his adult life campaigning for one office or another.
As it turned out, Crawford proved to be a skilled debater who, at more than one point in the face-off, overwhelmed her rival, former Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel. Indeed, Crawford delivered what was easily the most devastating jab of the night when she referred to Schimel — whose candidacy is benefitting from millions of dollars in spending from billionaire Elon Musk — as “Elon Schimel.”
That was just one of many moments in which Crawford inspired cheers from her backers — and moans from Schimel supporters — at watch parties across the state.
Crawford went into the debate with a track record as a prosecutor, trial lawyer and jurist. But not as a politician.
