Wisconsin schools superintendent candidates spar over funding, standards ahead of election

(WLUK) -- While every Wisconsinite's ballot in the 2025 spring election will include the high-stakes state Supreme Court race, voters will also decide who will lead the state's Department of Public Instruction (DPI), which oversees public schools.

The latest Marquette Law School poll shows a majority of people don't have an opinion on incumbent Jill Underly (D), a former teacher who has been state superintendent since 2021.

The poll also found most people haven't heard enough about her opponent, Brittany Kinser (R), who was a special education teacher for nearly a decade.

A major focus has been on testing standards, which were adjusted for the state's Forward Exam last year.
