100,000-plus donors from all 50 states flood Wisconsin Supreme Court race with cash
Wisconsin's Supreme Court election has truly become a national contest.
Records show that more than 100,000 people from all 50 states have sent money to the campaigns of liberal Susan Crawford and conservative Brad Schimel in hopes of helping them across the finish line. The two square off in a high-stakes contest on Tuesday, an election that will determine the ideological direction of the high court.
A Journal Sentinel review of the campaign reports for both candidates has found that around 77% of Crawford's donors come from outside Wisconsin, compared with only 15% of Schimel's backers.
But both drew the bulk of their actual cash from Wisconsinites. About two-thirds of Crawford's money came from state residents, while for Schimel, it was a whopping 94%.
Overall, Crawford has raised a record $26 million, almost double the $14 million Schimel has raised. In Wisconsin alone, Crawford has taken in nearly $17 million, more than Schimel has raised across the nation.
