...Toronto police told CBC News on Tuesday that Hyndman, 49, was found without vital signs in a laneway near the intersection of Queen Street and Broadview Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. ET Monday.
CBC arts reporter Eli Glasner said the location was near the apartment where Hyndman lived with Sabados, his off-screen partner and television co-host.
police Const. Caroline de Kloet said Tuesday afternoon that "out of privacy the Toronto police will not discuss any matter unless there's a criminal element pertaining to a specific person."
Det. Terry Wray said earlier the investigation remains "completely open." He added that police would not comment further until completing interviews. .....

(135,425 posts)I'm wondering if it wasn't foul play.
Usually, they'll put down some soppy speculation (appears to have collapsed and died) or at least say there wasn't a mark on him, or something on those lines, so you figure "Unlucky guy/heart attack," but they are not saying that.
Hope he wasn't mugged.

(54,713 posts)It seems the police aren't asking for witnesses or anything like that and are being very, very quiet on this, unusual for such a high profile death.
Either they have no idea of the cause and manner of death or it doesn't rise to a criminal case. Details have been unusually sparse, imo.

Toronto police say they found Hyndman's dead body in a Toronto alleyway at 11.00pm on Monday night close to the apartment where he lives with his partner and co-host Steven Sabados.
The Toronto police said they will not divulge more details about Hyndman's death unless it is deemed a criminal investigation. Law enforcement are still searching for clues as to what may have caused the tragic incident, reports CBC.

(135,425 posts)Lost his footing and went over the side, maybe just an unfortunate stumble, or perhaps he was a bit under the weather...?
Someone got mad at him and gave him a shove....?
He was upset and did a GBCW....?
No wonder it's still on open case.

(8,646 posts)So sad. I used to love Designer Guys. I agree there seem to be more questions than answers. Very strange circumstances and it doesn't seem that we are going to hear anything more until the family decides to release something...or until there are criminal charges if it was something nefarious that happened. I do know that sometimes the police won't release information if it's criminal in hopes that someone will come forward to 'set the record straight'.
But really at this point it could be anything. He could've stepped out for a walk and been jumped. Or had a heart attack. Or anything. I had an uncle who died suddenly at age 42 while in peak physical condition - sadly it happens sometimes for no reason at all (my uncle was eventually determined to have some strange undiagnosed genetic heart defect and his heart just stopped).

(135,425 posts)I went just last week to the funeral of a young cousin who was close to this guy's age. Left a wife and a couple of kids--died suddenly. I had another female cousin from an entirely different branch of the family tree (massive family I come from) who just dropped dead at age 55, totally unexpectedly.
You just never know.
It's never good, but in terms of knowing that the deceased's last moments weren't terrifying or somehow full of despair, it would be better if it was just a genetic oddity, a sudden death, and not a crime or substance abuse that did him in.
