Nine Avro Arrow planes will be recovered from Lake Ontario as part of Canada's 150th birthday celebrations.

Three museums, including Ottawa's Canadian Aviation and Space Museum, will oversee the historical conservation and restoration of the test models of the iconic Canadian jets.

"We initiated this program about a year ago with the idea of bringing back a piece of lost Canadian history to the Canadian public," said John Burzynski, head of OEX, the group leading the recovery efforts, in a media release Friday.

"We all have the same goal in mind: to find and return these beautiful pieces of Canadian technology to the public eye during this anniversary year of our incredible country."

1. The loss of that jet's existance was so traumatizing to my dad's generation

of Canadians. Too bad the actual jets themselves do not exist.

3. The Avro Program

A Canadian I worked with some years ago loaned me a book about this called Arrows to the Moon. The book details the background and amazing accomplishments of the Avro folks as well as how the program became a victim of the US military industrial complex. The Avro Engineers went on to lead the US space program. What I found revealing is how the Avro folks were educated in all aspects of product development while getting their Engineering degrees. They learned how to match imagination to reality. I highly recommend the book.

4. I'll look for it for my dad. He was more a WWII guy because his dad fought in it

when my dad was a tween. During WWII he used to lie on the ground just outside the Ottawa air base and sketch the fighter jets the soldiers were training to recognize by sound. The Rockcliffe airbase had one of everything including German planes at the time. It was a mile from his home. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of the book you suggest.

The "pride" of a generation - the "nationalism" - the conscience of a nation - especially in our own "MAGA" chaos - one has to wonder what could be accomplished with unity/bonding/serving the "common good."
