(18,676 posts)Isn't this kind of talk, er, treasonous?
I know Quebec has its own independence movement, but this "Wexit" nonsense is so cynical it's maddening.

(295 posts)Quebec, at least, has a legitimate beef with English Canada but the separatists there are smart enough not to pursue it to its alleged conclusion. They know that an independent Quebec would be anglophone within two generations and absorbed back into the Canadian fold within three. And francophone rights and privileges would be a thing of the past. But continual threats of separation does give them some political clout here and there and they are happy with that.
These Wexit idiots haven't thought it through. These people are not the sharpest crayons in the box. What can you expect from a group of people who thought that Alberta could be a world power if only we had some nuclear submarines to flex our muscle! (Think I'm making that up? Check this out: http://bouquetsofgray.blogspot.com/2003/03/hutton-alta-should-split-from-canada.html ) I guess those subs would patrol Lake Athabasca or the West Edmonton Mall.
Another group calling itself Alberta Proud thinks we should be protecting our "heritage" (a dog whistle there) and our "language" (a trumpet blast there) but a quick visit to their website shows an image of a Union Pacific boxcar with either a rusted out side or it's a victim of shotgun blasts. Not sure what this image of an American railroad's boxcar has to do with our "heritage" or "language" or what it has to do with Alberta.
What we have here is group of uneducated, illiterate people who are not getting the good jobs on the basis of their "heritage" and "language" and see those jobs going to different-coloured people who speak with accents just because those different-coloured people who speak with accents have the education and training for those jobs. (Some of them are... gasp!... women!)
So they wear their yellow vests, they shout into their bullhorns and they put up signs accusing Justin Trudeau of treason (without knowing the definition) but cannot do the one thing that might make a change in their favour. Make an effort.

(123,448 posts)Rene Lesvesque, was asked if it would come to blows. He said canada would not do that. It was the 1970s. People were into talking more. Canadians across the country changed how they went to school (in french immersion) and accepted Quebec's insistance on protecting it language. There is a Donald Britton documentary called "Champions" that went into the early struggle between canada and quebec over separation. We had leaders in Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Rene Levesque who were both very democratic and of good character. Rene didn't want to fool quebecers into getting independance. He wanted it to be real if it happened. Integrity was a thing back then. I'm afraid Kenney comes from the american right wing school of win at all cost and destroy democracy while you are at it if it means you and your tight group of rich american benefactors get what they want no matter who or what it destroys. Alberta politically is a franchise of republican elites in the usa.

(249 posts)He's come out of the woodwork, too bad. He would love to have Alberta leave Canada!! How in the world does anyone think this is a good idea. There are already many people unemployed and I guess they want more.
Kenney sure is creating jobs like he said he would. I of course knew that he would be hitting healthcare and education but he has even gone down the gutter further than expected. Him and Ford are all mini's Trumps. We should be so proud.
