Jeremy Corbyn and Noam Chomsky win Sean MacBride Peace Prize amid media silence

UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was awarded the Sean MacBride Peace Prize along with Noam Chomsky and Japanese anti-military base activists, yet the award received scant coverage in the British media.

The International Peace Bureau presents the Sean MacBride Peace Prize to individuals, organizations or movements for their work for peace, disarmament and human rights.

Corbyn was deemed this year’s recipient, along with renowned scholar Noam Chomsky and the All Okinawa Council Against Henoko New Base. He received his award in Geneva on Friday.

The Labour leader was recognized for his “sustained and powerful political work for disarmament and peace.” His longtime work with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the UK and the Stop the War Campaign was commended, along with his work for peace as a politician.

1. Don't want to gripe or threadcrap from the off,

but it would have a bit more value and meaning if Corbyn'd take a stand against Trident and the Trident replacement.

Perhaps he's been too preoccupied with Brexit and day-to-day politics.

Trident should be at or near the top of any progressive lawmaker's priority list.

3. I suspect that he's doing as much as he can...

....but he does have considerable opposition to taking a stand against Trident both in his own party and the wider electorate.

As to the OP? Well I may have heard of the Nobel Peace Prize but I've honestly never heard of the Sean MacBride Peace Prize, and the obscurity of the gong would appear to be a good explanation of why UK media coverage has been so scant.

4. Channel 4 has done a 'fact check' on this:

We used Factiva, a paid-for media archive, and searched for mentions of the prize in the UK media since it was established in 1992.

Leaving the search options as wide as possible (“all dates” and “all sources”), we can only find two mentions of the prize in UK newspapers.

One is a Sunday Times story from 1994 about activists trying to hand over the award to the Israeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu.

The other is a Guardian article from 2013 about a former winner – the Irish president Michael D Higgins.

It implies a causal link between two things which may be - I'd go further, almost always are - sheer coincidence!

7. Yeah, and the only time RT (where the OP comes from) has covered it is this story

They didn't mention Corbyn, Chomsky or the Japanese winning it, or the presentation. Just hopped on to the "British media not covering!" bandwagon. It's been won in the past by Chelsea Manning and the people of Lampedusa (handling Mediterranean refugees), for instance, but basically the media just doesn't cover it.

8. He's always been against Trident personally and has spoken against it for years.

But he can't impose a "No renewal" policy on his party singlehandedly. The right wing of the party still have the votes at the party conference to block that, which is unfortunate, because Trident no longer serves any useful purpose.
