Every Briton born before Brexit could get EU citizenship

A group of British citizens living in the Netherlands hoping to retain their EU citizenship after Brexit have won the right to take their case to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

If their case is successful, it could allow all UK citizens to keep their EU citizenship despite the UK leaving the EU.

The five Britons had asked a court in Amsterdam to refer their case to the ECJ claiming that their existing rights could not be removed due to the result of the Brexit referendum.

The group's lawyer, Christiaan Alberdingk Thijm, argued that Britons can retain EU citizenship thanks to article 20 of the Lisbon Treaty, which states, "citizenship of the union shall be additional to and not replace national citizenship".

Well that would be mighty fine. Keep EU citizenship with all the benefits it bestows while watching collective right wing heads explode at the very thought!

If they are successful it would set an interesting precedent. I have seen various different ideas about a special EU citizenship idea and it is still a matter of wanting special treatment for me. And us much as I get the sentiment here, surely a ruling in favour would open the floodgates to more challenges from people wanting this special EU citizenship.

To be more clear I mean people like me, a non EU citizen who has lived in the EU for a number of years(long before Brexit), my kids were born here and my connections to the EU are just as strong if not more so than people from the UK. This would have to be considered by the court plus what about the asylum seekers seeking permanent residency status?
Like I said it would certainly be interesting if the ruling went their way.

Heck I'd love an EU citizenship, it makes sense for my situation and one of the EU's core beliefs is fairness to all citizens. So for me if it was successful then it absolutely has to open up the process for not just Brits or it's nothing at all.

About the only way I would find such an arrangement acceptable would be it is an open call for a defined period of time, say 2 years to get your application in. Those that want to will, those that voted out probably will to, lol.

That seems the fair way to handle it. A lot of countries have those.
