The National Crime Agency says it has found no evidence of criminality after investigating a series of claims against the Brexit campaign group Leave.EU and the businessman Arron Banks.

Investigators interviewed Banks and the Leave.EU campaign’s chief executive, Liz Bilney, as they looked into potential offences concerning £8m of EU referendum campaign funding.

On Tuesday, the NCA said no evidence of crime had been found and no further action would be taken against the pair, or the campaign groups Better for the Country Ltd or Leave.EU.

A referral was made by the Electoral Commission in October last year claiming Banks was not the true source of the £8m loans, and the company through which they were made, the Isle of Man-registered Rock Holdings Ltd, should not have been used to make donations because it is registered outside the UK.
