I run a old fart special HPs5000 & windows 7. Updates are a crash / restore

In that when I have tried to let it update the last 2 major "critical" updates it crashes my PC-freezes at the re-start. I was barely able to get it to take a restore on the 3rd try.

I have turned off updates in total.

As this is a old PC I hope to replace in 4 months-is this a safe way to keep it useable?.

I have AVG free version and no problems other than windows created ones.

You can create an intallation image for Fedora Desktop on a usb memory stick then you can boot up with the memory stick and an installation program will walk you through the intallation process.

It doess leave you with a stable reatively eay to use computer.

Download and install the free version of ccleaner run the disk cleaner and registry cleaner.

then do a disk defrag

When you get a new machine, get a refurbished from newegg or tigerdirect, etc.

You can get a WIN 10 Pro machine with DVD R-W, 1TB hard drive, 8 GB of RAM for $300 to $350. Keep an eye out for USB 3 and more than one video output, too.

Then put linux on your old machine. Will it run a 64-bit OS?

3. Yes it is safe.

The CCleaner download is a good one as well since there is most likely lots to clean up. Just say yes to the defaults in CCleaner and save a registry copy when it asks you to do so.

5. Start by checking the drive.

Typically when that happens it is because the drive is going bad.

If you open windows explorer find the C drive right click on it and chose properties. In the window that pops up at the top find the tools tab then click on error checking have it scan the drive and fix errors. You will need to reboot for it to happen and it should begin the check before you get into windows if it doesn't then repeat the process. That will go through the drive and look for errors and attempt to fix them.

It is fairly common for it not to run the check correctly on disks that have issues keep trying till it does it. It can take some time so do it when you have the time available for it.

After that completes it would probably be a good idea to check the system files by opening and administrative command prompt and typing sfc /scannow that will run through and check all the system files for consistency.

If all of that comes back clean take a hard look at your security software. They often cause issues with updates as they try to lock down system files.

If it is crashing though I suspect the drive is on it's way out.

I have CC cleaner but I don't know the status.

And I'll go through this tomorrow when I don't need it. I was just very happy to get it to finally do a restore -odd thing is it said the restore failed but when I finally got it started it said the restore had been successful. I just went to updates & shut down everything & so far so good.

Sounds like C drive needs a fixin and thanks for the brainware update.

And not the best time of year-package tracking etc... & I don't have a spare pc or cellphone.

I think windows is trying to shut me down as a luddite.

8. I bought a new really good HP Win7 machine -

About a year ago. Maybe a little more. With the express purpose of not updating it to avoid win10. Microsoft forced win10 on my ex, and it really pissed me off. I have freeware anti virus and things like malwarebytes.

I may go Linux with my next machine.

Or if I go win10, I'll anti beacon.
