ZOOM and HDMI from laptop to big screen AUDIO question

I bought a zoom concert recently. Wanting to watch it on my big screen I thought I would hook up HDMI cable from the laptop where i WAS streaming it to an HDMI input on the big screen. Before the zoom concert became available, I watched music videos on you tube and picture and audio traveled across the HDMI cable just fine. When it was time to zoom and the person signing us in was talking to others and eventually us to get us signed in I realized I only had sound on the laptop, not on my bigscreen and not on my amp and speakers that run off the big screen audio outputs! (This had all been ok with youtube). I never had a chance to ask the sign in person why I was not getting audio, but was able to hurriedly hook up some 2.1 laptop speakers to the laptop that gave me enough sound from the concert to make it worthwhile.

Can a zoom promoter/provider cut off sound to the HDMI port out from the device you are streaming on? The picture ran out fine, but not the sound.

So if you were just mirroring the video to the TV or using it as a second monitor, it would be easy to get the video there, but it might have just continued to use the laptop speakers as default, unless you tell it to send the audio to a different device. (The setting for that is in the audio options when you've got a meeting open)

Thank you so much. I'm in a conference now (multitasking!) and have been thinking something was wrong with my audio driver.

Select the Playback Tab and make sure the output device is your TV. It will say something like "Digital Display Audio" "High Definition Audio Device"

Zoom may be resetting the default to the laptop audio speakers.

Or see above post as that is most likely correct, since I don't have zoom...lol.

But it's more likely the issue is in the Zoom options. It has its own default audio device which can (and often is) different from the default device on the machine (it overrides the default for it's own purposes). It will typically default to the laptop's speakers and headphone jack.

Which can be very handy at times, other times it can be a drag.

It's also possible Zoom changed the default sound out on the PC itself, but less likely as it wouldn't need to because it has it's own override.

And to answer you last question, NO a presenter could not do that themselves ... they can't change your zoom audio settings from afar like that.
