I just read an article that said they recycle them to retrofit old products.
Best Buy used to have a barrel at the door.

That's why places will take your old gear without b-tching. They get paid to do so.

You already paid for the recycling. Nobody wants the really old stuff. Charities can't sell it.

Excludes collector's items, which you don't sound like you have.

I have an old HP all-in-one that actually will scan multiple pages via sheet feed, so even after I've given up on it as a printer, it does what the much nicer scanner won't do.

There are videos on YouTube that show you how to strip them down for the precious metals. Dunno how many old printers you would need - couple of hundred?
