Is it your computer with a malware? Go to the sent folder and view a full header to determine the IP address of the sender. Compare it to ones you know you sent.

If the problem resides on your drive, scan the drive for the malware. Try Sophos anti-virus = savosx_80_he.dmg.

Change your email provider. Yahoo has a horrid security record; my Yahoo account has sent more spam than even my Hotmail account and that's saying something.

from a Mac and was using a Verizon account.

I openend it, the link and responded but it did not happen to me. I am using Sophos anti-virus, but I don't know if that helped me or not.

I use Yahoo as a "throwaway address" for ordering stuff online and so forth, and my real e-mail comes to my GMail address.

I was using the e-mail address provided by Comcast, but its spam filter was over-enthusiastic. It bounced legitimate e-mails from my clients without telling me or sending them to the Spam folder. I gradually transferred my personal and business e-mail to GMail. The Comcast address is still active (it's part of the deal for getting cable Internet), but I check it only once a day, just in case someone didn't get the word about the change or forgets.

GMail seems to have an appropriate spam filter (a legitimate message ends up in Spam about once every two or three months).

Here it is: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

Also make sure that your system is updated, along with flash, and your web browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc.)
And if you have (ugh) Microsoft Office, you had better do their updates as well.

Other than that, there are some good tips here.
