Related: About this forumAnyone know of a good alternative to teamviewer / remote device access for iPad?
I’ve been talking my senior mom through how to do things on her iPad all the time, by phone... seriously every.day.
Got her to download teamviewer but for some reason we haven’t been able to connect it.
Ideally, I’d be able to either control her device to get what she needs done faster, or at least be able to see her screen because she can’t even tell me basic stuff like which app she’s in at the time.

(1,970 posts)I've not used it but it seems Skype is an option. And this guy says TeamViewer needs a paid plan to work!

(3,135 posts)As their website indicates, it's free for non-commercial use. Have been using it for many years with my MIL's computer and a few friends. It requires that both users are running the same version of their program, so I have kept different versions of their program available. Recently they disabled older versions, so we're all on the same version now.
Just tried it for computer->iPad and it works (for free). As or more complex than Zoom.

(3,135 posts)With Zoom, she has to join your meeting and share her screen with you. Messages looks simpler—

Zoom looks too complex for my 95-year-old MIL, but I haven’t tried out Messages yet.

(1,970 posts)Sadly Messages for iOS doesn't support screen sharing or remote control, it's Mac-only feature.
However ... if there is a Mac at the remote end in addition to the iOS device ... you can plug the iOS device into the Mac and make the iOS screen available to the Mac for movie recording ... then share the Mac screen with Messages and the remote Mac user can at least see the iOS screen. More than a couple of steps, and requires a Mac at both ends to make it work
And yeah, I think Skype would be easier to use than Zoom for this on an the iPad.

(3,135 posts)From an iPad Mini to an iPhone. Lots of steps to do so with either application. I totally recommend you borrow a friends iPad, or have some other iOS device you can practice between. From the Apple support link I posted, messages still looks simpler once your mom is logged in, but I haven’t tried it yet.
(For TeamViewer, your iPad would need the “TeamViewer: remote control” app, and your mother’s iPad would use “TeamViewer:quick support.” I wasn’t able to remotely control the iPad, though.)
