Related: About this forumHey Apple, where are the 27" power iMacs with M1 processors?
New 24" iMacs were introduced today, but with maximums of only 512GB storage and 8GB memory. That's it. Can't be configured larger.
Professionals with real work to do need terabytes of storage and ability to add memory.
So disappointing ...
Last month, Apple discontinued two iMac configurations with either 512GB and 1TB of SSD storage for the 21.5-inch iMac with 4K display, fueling speculation of an Apple Silicon-based iMac announcement. The rumors were true: Not only did Apple officially announce the iMacs are getting its impressive M1 processors, but Apples new iMacs finally be available in colors other than gray.
The new iMac looks more like Apples Pro Display XDR, so the back is flat rather than curved, and the side profile is slimmed down to just 0.6 inches (11.5 millimeters) thin, and it features a 24-inch, 4.5K Retina display with 11.3 million pixels, and 500 nits of brightness. All the new iMacs will be available in all the bold colors of the rainbow. (Its still keeping its signature gray, though.) Happy to see Apple is embracing color for Macs again, which it abandoned after the iMac G3.Apple plans to launch its new iMacs starting at $1,299 ($1,249 for education) for a 7-core processor, and $1,499 for an 8-core processor.
What Apple didnt talk about much as the specs of the processor in its new iMacs. It was rumored that the iMacs would have had a new M1 processor with 12 total cores instead of eight like the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Mini. However, the new iMacs are only getting the standard M1 chip, with an eight-core CPU and eight-core GPU, and thats probably why less attention was paid to the processor and more to the new iMac design. And because these specs are the same, its likely the new iMacs will have the same performance as the MacbookPro, for instance, which is disappointing.
Each model comes with just 256GB SSD storage, and the more expensive version comes in more colors: green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. The cheaper model comes in green, pink, blue, and silver. Theres also a $1,699, 8-core model that comes with 512GB of SSD storage, but all models will have 8GB of memory.

(6,350 posts)Rumor is will be announced in June and available at end of year with upgraded M2 chip.
I've decided to check out the 24" anyhow and price out more memory.
Any excuse to visit the Apple Store, right?

(391 posts)I just dont have the time to deal with the constant restarts and virus management. I dont do anything too heavy so I just want something that works consistently. My current go to computer that is reliable is a 2010 Mac mini. I had it upgraded with a solid state HD and maxed the memory. It is fabulous and does what I want, when I want, with no fuss. At work I have to use PC. It is a constant awful nightmare at least once a week when the network updates come through. I seriously waste an hour or more of taxpayer money (Im a federal employee) waiting for my computer to work. It is effing frustrating at best!!! It is so bad that I have put ticket after ticket in to IT to make my office computer work for my virtual meetings and Zoom calls that are mandatory in my my position. The effing machine sucks. The pc is horrible. And I wish the govt had the balls to cancel the contracts and rebid. I would use Unix or Mac OS or anything rather than windows and pc. It is effing awful.
It's cliche, but you really do get what you pay for. Computers, cars, food, etc.
