Have a new mac air. problem

Still acquainting myself with it, going ok. Well, this morning i get a warning my Mcafee or whatever is expired click here to renew. I don't want it or want to renew it. How do I stop the popup from coming on the screen constantly?

1. Open applications under Finder, then drag it into the trash

3. It is better to use an app cleaner.

Several are available in the App Store. There are multi-aspects to the app software. To
insure that they are all removed, use software that will find and delete each one.

5. McAffee on windows actually required a special remover tool

Since it would hook into the system so deeply.

2. I have had this

Odd that's it's on a new Mac. Here is some info from McAfee about the scam. I think I had to delve into Apple support pages to figure out what I had to remove to make it go away. If you're not feeling like doing that and you bought the computer at Apple, I'd go over and let a genius help me.

4. If it came by email, spam it. Don't open it!

6. Call Apple Support.

They can walk you through this easily. By buying their products, particularly if new, you have paid for this support. If new should be especially no problem.

Yesterday I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with them. My machines range from 2015 to two years ago. They still helped me with 4 issues involving 2 Airs, 1 desktop, Magic Mouse, and an old iPad. Decided to buy a basic new iPad for my husband. 3-day free delivery to boot!

I have tons of praise for their support staff.

7. Thank you all for the help

I tried to use the application delete method and could not find the application anywhere. I called apple support and spent an hour on phone with her. she had access to my screen and we went all over trying to find the application. Finally she said well we are going to have to reinstall the OS. This will take 2-3 hours so you can just sit back and relax while this process goes on. Hopefully the problem will be solved after this. She sent me an email with contact number and so on. I was very happy with her help and will let you all know how it works in a couple hours. I am using my old laptop for this message.

8. If you got a new mac, how did you get McAfee?

I don't recall that ever being on a new mac.
I am setting up a new mini (today?) and don't want any negative surprises.

9. Got the mac last week

Been using it clicked on a page and was viewing when all of a sudden I started getting this from McAfee. no idea where it came from.

10. Oh Oh, that was a phishing web page, IMO.

With email phishing, it's usually easy enough to tell a phishing email.

Usually, just show full headers and the sender will be exposed as "not what the message appears to be"

With web pages, I suspect that if you hover over the "renew" link, it will be some bogus URL. (or right-click on it)

If you didn't download anything, you are fine.

I checked and I am using ublock-origin on all my browsers. It probably will block phishing sites, though I got it just to block ads (which are a common vector for malware)

11. Finally got it fixed

Reinstalled software and after three hours i tried it again. still getting notifications. called back and we again began search for where this was hid. Did not take as long as I spotted the site name in one area we searched. Then had to go to notifications and remove that site from sending notifications. Removed all sites with the exception of Democratic Underground. Now i just have to get my passwords on this computer and I will be back in business.
