Ubuntu swaps application menus for HUD control system (BBC)
The Ubuntu operating system is to replace its application menus with a "head-up display" (HUD) box.
Users control the HUD interface by typing in the command they want carried out.
Developers of the Linux-based software say they will initially offer the HUD as an option, allowing users to "hide" their menu bars.
They say that using the HUD is faster than "mousing through a menu" and makes applications feel more powerful.
The changes were revealed on a blog posted by Mark Shuttleworth, the lead designer at Canonical - the London-based firm behind Ubuntu.

The best features are the ones you can opt out of. What seems like a cool whiz-bang feature to some people -- even a majority -- may be despised by some. Novices and power users often disagree on which features are the best choice, and low-vision users have their own issues. This seems like a helpful feature for "inexperts", but I'm not sure the charm won't wear off.

(90,061 posts)Shell programming has always been (much) quicker and faster, once you knew how. This ought to be interesting, to see where this goes and how far it gets.

(51,076 posts)I didn't do windblows until win98 cause I liked the dos interface of a blank screen and a cursor.
Ubuntu 11.04 user here. 11.10 and unity sucks or better yet UNITY sucks. Especially on a computer, a tablet or smart phone maybe but on a desktop, no way.
Is this going to be an option in ubuntu 12.04?
I guess I could go read the article, thanks.
Peace
On edit, I like gnome2 just fine as I autohide my menu and delete the status bar so I have a full screen for DU, by golly
