It looks like one of the frontrunners will be Cheri Beasley, an African-American woman who served as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. She was a jurist as late as 2020, while Jeff Jackson has declined to run in previous elections. Here is an article that I posted which provides some recent information about her campaign.
