Will NJ Democrats do to Menendez-D what they did to Torricelli-D in 2002?

Replace him on the ballot with former US Senator Bradley or Corzine or Rush Holt which similar to Lautenberg-D replaced Torricelli in 2002.

Maybe it's because I'm a lifelong NJ resident and lifelong NJ Democrat that I know how ridiculous that would be.

If Menendez loses, the state party will have only itself to blame. He could have (and I think should have) stepped aside and just let a new Dem run for the seat and they likely would have won (Dems outnumber Republicans 2 to 1 in the state). But instead they dug in their heels and now we are having to spend time and money defending what should be a safe Senate seat.

3. What if the NJ Democratic Party leadership had stayed neutral and the grassroots aggressively

4. The NJ Democratic party doesn't know the meaning of the word neutral....

...if they did they would have let Richard Codey continue on and run for re-election as governor, after he took over when Florio stepped down and before the party bosses decided Corzine was their man with the plan (and by plan I mean money and connections).

2. Not sure whether or not it's still an option

We're right around the point where the NJ court ruled that he could be replaced (despite the deadline in the law)... so every day closer would make it harder and harder to accomplish (assuming Menendez would drop out of course).

I'm not sure whether or not they amended the law after 2002... but early voting has already started in NJ. I don't think that was an option in 2002. So it may already be too late.
