STAY SAFE!!!!! And please post when you can to let us know how you are. As a former Manhattan and central Jersey resident, this thing freaks me out even from a distance

(6,287 posts)and we've been hammered by the storm for the past 48+ hours. Lots of flooding and widespread damage. It's still raining and now the wind has switched in the opposite direction of what it was yesterday, causing even more problems. Unfortunately, because of our relatively small population, we'll no doubt be totally ignored by the national media and response from the federal government will be slow. Such is life on a sandbar.

Eugene Robinson in this morning's Washington Post:

As has been noted, the words climate change were not spoken during the presidential debates. Hurricane Sandy wants to know why.

(8,945 posts)I just read that things were not to bad in the Washingron area, relatively speaking. I am now looking at pictures from NYC where I lived for many years, and I can't belive my eyes http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57542285/sandy-leaves-nyc-dark-and-deluged/
PS: did you post at such an ungodly hour because of the storm or are you an even earlier riser than I am?

(59,989 posts)This is the worst storm I have seen in my life.
We picked up our NYC daughter on Sunday. We were in the lucky 8% of people in my town who never lost power and there was no damage to our home. There still are roads closed and a couple in our town died when they were killed when a tree hit their car. Word of that spread quickly through the town - putting all of our minor problems in perspective.
With no cable and no internet, we learned of the NYC problems through messages sent to our daughter and WNYC. (It actually took us a few minutes to realize that we still had radio. As one who listened for hours a day to radio in the 1960s and 1970s it was kind of funny that it was not something I immediately thought to do.
I hope that everyone else here had as minor problems as we did. (Our only problem is that we need to get a GIANT tree removed from the woods behind our hour. Then again - it is very good it fell that way hitting nothing. )

(27,315 posts)My friend in NJ got lucky too. He only lost power for a few hours and apparently, his summer house on Cape May only got very minor damages.
I feel for all these people on coastal areas who have lost everything or nearly everything.

(8,945 posts)you live in the northern half, right? I used to live a few miles inland from Sandy Hook, lived there for some 8 years, then moved further inland in Ocean county. Befre that I lived for quite a few years in Manhattan a couple of blocks from Wahington Sqare. Though I've been in rural IL for some 8 years now, that part of the country still feels like a kind of home and I am horrified at what happened. Anyway... very glad to see that you went through it with only minor inconvenience, relatively speaking.

(10,117 posts)...are okay. The pictures I have been seeing from NJ are horrendous. I can't even imagine how scary it must have been to experience such a storm.

(15,239 posts)I follow Jeff Jarvis on Twitter, and he is in Jersey as well. No power still.

I do sympathize with the gas lines/shortage. Back in '08, there were a number of hurricanes in the gulf that ultimately led to shortages, lines, and $4/gallon gas in Atlanta. It was not a well covered story at the time, but it goes to show how fragile our every day life is when something gets disrupted. I called my Republican Congressmen's office at the time, and they blew me off, saying it was a state issue.

(59,989 posts)people I know from near there - things are getting back to normal.
I hope that all is well with her and her family and that we see her back here again.
We lost power for eight days, and Internet/cable access returned a day later.
A tree fell and ripped off one an eave, but we were fairly lucky compared to devastation in other parts of the states.
There was no gas. People were waiting in lines for hours, driving more than 30 miles to get gas. I stayed put.
After eight long cold days, I'm glad to be warm and catching up with the news.
Thanks for caring.
