You may have seen the advertisement appear on a number of websites in recent months. Titled “How 2 Boston Grads Are Disrupting the Auto Insurance Industry,” it pictures two Asian women wearing blue hooded sweatshirts bearing the logo of Everquote, a Cambridge tech company that allows users to compare auto insurance quotes.

Everquote was in fact founded by two Boston grads, but they are MIT alums Seth Birnbaum and Tomas Revesz, both white men. Like many tech startups, Everquote has little gender diversity in its top ranks. There is one woman on its leadership team, a director of talent acquisition, and no women on its board of directors.

Ryan Ruffing, a spokesman for Everquote, said that the women in the ad are also MIT grads and EverQuote employees. In particular, Ruffing said, they are quantitative analysts on the company’s online marketing team who “initiated and led” the ad campaign.

“They decided to try telling a first hand story as one of their ideas and these creatives are the result of those efforts, which both they, and we, are proud to see come to life,” Ruffing wrote in an email. “However, due to some recent unexpected confusion, we are currently phasing out/changing versions of that ad.”

In a follow-up interview, Revesz said that the company was caught off guard when it began to receive inquiries from some web users who wondered if the women actually worked at Everquote. He said that the ad would be changed to remove the number “2,” and expressed confidence that this would clear up any confusion regarding their roles at the company.

additional comment: I was lead to believe these two women are the founders and leaders of the company..."that is revolutionizing an industry" ....That is what the original ad lead me to believe...They do work at the company, but are not the leaders or founders..I saw the ad dozens of times. Everquote is a new company that takes your personal information, (with your permission) and helps an individual compare auto insurance rates..(when I saw the pictures in the ad, I said to myself..yes..that is the ad)
The ad in my opinion is deceptive and a total lie. If this is what the new company is about, then it deserves to fail..I am guessing that thousands of others were duped into believing exactly the same thing. I never clicked on the ad, I found this article and it explained what was going on Just was curious, and wondered about it. In the "good old day" I would go to the library to get such information..now, a few clicks..and there it is.....Yes, it is easy, but I am not sure that is all that good. Many younger individuals will never really learn to use the library..????(but that is another discussion for another time)

If you hit the link, you will see it prominently displayed, 2nd or 3rd down from the very top. The wording has been slightly modified, but it still leaves the impression that the company's has Asian roots. As you can see in the post above, this is not true. Yes, the Ad is back and although a few words were changed, the impression is the same....

By the way..the above web site is one of the most visited sites in the world, as people seek to check on the email.. The ad in that position was not cheap. You can bet it was very expensive...Oh..the title of the ad is..
Boston Grads Distrupted a 19 Billion Dollar Industry

Just as a note of clarification....the two pictured are workers at the company, not the leaders...Here is a statement from the company on the ad,
"In particular, Ruffing said, they are quantitative analysts on the company’s online marketing team who “initiated and led” the ad campaign. "

so..these two work in the ..."marketing team"...and they "initiated and led" the ad campaign.. think about that for a moment....yet we are left with an impression that the company is led by women....You know, I think that is the impression that the ad trying to make......Yet...if you read the first post..it was founded by white men...What do you think???....Here is the quote from the post above, about who founded the company...

..................................................................................................................................
"Everquote was in fact founded by two Boston grads, but they are MIT alums Seth Birnbaum and Tomas Revesz, both white men. Like many tech startups, Everquote has little gender diversity in its top ranks. There is one woman on its leadership team, a director of talent acquisition, and no women on its board of directors.
