Related: About this forumHow many men here suffer from BPH? What are you taking?
I've been suffering from BPH for a couple of years. I'm currently on tamsulosin; but, I still get up during the night.
I'm also taking a 'natural' product which does seem to be helping; but, progress is slow.
My doctor wants to prescribe finasteride (generic for Proscar). What I've read about it is scary! Google on 'post-finasteride syndrome.' Some men have said it completely terminated their sex lives - no sexual desire as well as erectile dysfunction.
If you take finasteride, what was your experience?
If you're taking a natural product, like saw palmetto, is it effective?

Why don't they just remove the prostate?
It's not like you need it.

(11,603 posts)I've tried tamsulosin (Flomax), finasteride (Proscar), Avodart, Uroxatrol. And some "natural products" including saw palmetto. None made any difference.
As for side effects while taking them, yes, that part was different. Crummy orgasm on one or two of them, I'd have to look up some old notes. Nasal congestion with the flomax.
I'm just living with it because what I've read about surgery (including laser surgery) is that a lot of people have had horrible results (incontinence -- leg bags, having to cathaterize themselves, no sex ability, etc.).
I know there are risks of not having the surgery too.
