Saru Jayaraman has been trying to change tip culture for more than 20 years. It’s finally working



In the last year, Saru Jayaraman has been asked to tip baristas in Berkeley. She’s been asked to tip a florist in New York City. And, at the airport, she’s been asked to tip by a self-serve checkout kiosk manning a concession stand, no human employees in sight.

“Who exactly am I tipping?” she asks.

It’s exhausting, but she sees the upside.

For decades, Jayaraman has advocated for fair wages for restaurant employees. And tipping fatigue is helping to garner a groundswell of support for her cause.

1. During Covid, I tipped everybody no matter what.

Now. Forget it. I tip in sit down restaurants, delivery, and other services typical of traditional tipping like a haircut. No more at Dairy Queen, grocery stores, or anything like that.

Oh and I love the tipping at restaurants now. They tell you what to tip. I was going way overboard. Now they tell us what to tip. I’m saving money.

Tipping has changed for the better and worse.

2. Crumbl Cookies.

You select and order your cookies by yourself at a kiosk. You pay electronically. They want a tip for showing you your cookies in a box with a hand wave and then closing it.

4. This may seem like a conspiracy theory, but...

The supreme court just ruled that although public officials could not take bribes, they could take "tips".
A month or so ago in Las Vegas Trump said he thought that tips should not be taxable.
Rick Scott and Ted Cruz introduced an act to make tips non-taxable.

It may be a coincidence, I'm one of those people who thinks that our oiligarchs really do get together behind closed doors to run things the way they want.
